BIOINFORMATICS
Bioinformatics is a broad multidisciplinary field that combines biology, computer science, statistics and mathematics to analyze and interpret biological data, particularly DNA, RNA and proteins. This branch mainly analyses biological data and develop new software using biological tools. It is mainly used to extract knowledge from biological data through the development of algorithms and software.
Bioinformatics has broad applications including genome sequencing, gene expression analysis, protein structure prediction, drug discovery, personalized medicines, etc. A significant application of bioinformatics can be found in the fields of precision and preventive drug which are mainly focused on developing measures to prevent, control and cure dreadful infectious diseases.
IILM University, Greater Noida, offers a bachelor of technology (B.Tech) in bioinformatics as an undergraduate program of 4-year that involves the application of computational methods to analyze biological data. It also offers specialization in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The curriculum includes biology, chemistry, computer science, maths, statistics and bioinformatics courses. The curriculum is industry based aiming to prepare the students ready to work in industry after 4 years.
Bioinformatics is a broad field covering subfields and applications which include:-
•Genomics:- the study of complete genetic material or genome using bioinfomatics tools to annotate, analyze through sequencing technologies.
•Transcriptomics:- it is the study of gene expression of mRNA that transcripts in a cell or tissue . Tools are used to analyze large scale data to identify differentially expressed gene pathways.
•Proteomics:- study of proteins involving their structure, function and interactions. It is used to analyze the function and structure with different types of interactions.
•Metabolomics :- it is the study of small molecules or metabolites that are produced by cells or tissues. Tools are used to identify metabolic pathways of diseases.
•Personalized medicines:- bioinformatics tools and technologies help analyze genetic variation which help scientists to develop a treatment for patients.
•Environmental biotechnology:- bioinformatics aid in studying microbial communities in an environment which helps to monitor and control environmental pollution.
•Computational biology:- bioinformatics is extremely helpful in finding out fundamental principles of biosciences, gene regulation , function , and expression.
Much more variety of applications is seen under bioinformatics.
Career scope in bioinformatics:
Career opportunities include positions in pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, govt agencies. Graduates can work as bioinformatics analysts, data scientists, software developers ,research scientists, bioinformatics consultants, drug research scientist, agricultural bioinformatics scientist, bioinformatics engineer, computational biologists, individual contributors as well as educators and work in academic institutes.
Hence, B.tech in bioinformatics develops a strong foundation in both biology and computer science making them apply computational methods to biological problems to make contributions to the field of bioinformatics.
