Future Foods: Emerging food trend in 2050
FUTURE FOODS: EMERGING FOOD TREND IN 2050
The past decades have seen tremendous changes in agriculture and food processing innovation. Since the population is increasing day by day, global food production has doubled to meet the demands of rising hunger of the population. Agriculture depends upon various factors such as soil, climate, temperature, etc.
Due to many factors such as disasters, application of pesticides we have seen a drastic change in food style and pattern and drastically the ratio of producing and eating healthy food is declining rapidly. More likely by 2050, transformation to healthy diets will require substantial dietary shifts.
People will depend on sustainable and alternative proteins, personalized nutrition, vertical farming and biofortified foods. Below mentioned are few future foods on which people will be dependent and are expected to seen in coming years:-
1. Algae and seaweeds: Algae and seaweeds will become more abundant with declining nutrition obtained from soil based plant culture. It offers a highly nutritious diet which also provides essential minerals as well as rich protein, iron and antioxidants. Algae can be farmed and grown easily to meet the demand of hunger. In few countries such as Japan and South Korea these foods have been enjoyed since centuries, and later on other countries will adopt this as well.
2. Lab-grown meat: this method is also termed as cell-based meat. This product involves growing proteins from animal cells in laboratories in order to produce meat without requiring the space or resources needed for factory farms. It is also done to reduce the environmental footprint of meat production, animal abuse and address ethical concerns related to animal welfare.
3. Grain sources/pseudocereals: beans, legumes and nuts production and consumption will increase as people will start exploring new and resilient grain varieties that can withstand rough environmental conditions and provide higher nutritional values. Beans, legumes and nuts have higher protein amount with less fat percentage which is considered as good source of food. Many people will learn to cook and bake with different grains or pseudocereals, which can be eaten like grains but are technically neither grains nor grasses. Pseudocereals such as quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat and fonio are expected to be seen in regular diet.
4. Insects: Insects are already being consumed in few countries like China but in later stage they will become an important source of proteins in other countries because farming insects requires less space and capital, lesser than plants and animals. According to the World Economic Forum, we are also running out of protein for the growing population, which is estimated to reach 10 billion by 2050. Many insects offer comparable amounts of protein to animal-based proteins.
5. Food and its packaging material: many countries have started to find out new and innovative ideas which aim to reduce waste and also to fulfill the hunger demands of consumers. People have brought up ideas of serving food to customers in such a way that the packaging can be also eaten up. For example, in India tea cups are being made from biscuits so that after having tea the cups can be eaten up.
Conclusion:-
All the above mentioned are few food items which are expected to be in groceries and regular diets. Food industry is constantly evolving day by day and beyond innovative foods themselves, you can expect technological advances in near future. Among the creative changes food system will unfold the increase in robotic or automated farming and ways to reduce food waste and spoilage.
