Application Of Biotechnology in daily lives

APPLICATION OF BIOTECHNOLOGY IN DAILY LIVES

We must have heard the term ‘Biotechnology’, but a few know the actual meaning of what is actually biotechnology. Biotechnology is defined as application of scientific and engineering principles to the processing of material by biological agents to provide goods and services.

Now we can discuss the applications of biotechnology in various fields:-

Application in medicine:

Every pharmaceutical is derived from systems of organisms such as yeast, plant, fungus and bacteria or any other biological system. Medicines, vaccinations, any other medical drug is using technologies like PCR, RNA Recombination techniques and various methods. For diabetic patients, insulin is derived from sheep to meet the body’s insulin requirements. Even organ transplantations, cell therapies, tissue cultures are all done through biotechnology but with certain rules and regulations. Recombinant DNA technologies help in the mass production of safe and more effective therapeutics drugs. At present, about 30 recombinant drugs have been approved all over the world.

Application in agriculture:

Its main use is in producing better and healthy crops to fulfill the growing population’s hunger demands. To make better crops ,‘Genetically modified crops’ are made where the plants, bacteria, fungi and animal genes are altered by manipulation to produce new crops ,to make it pest resistant and also to make the best yield from a single plant. Mainly pest resistance plants are obtained which act as bio-pesticides, such as Bt cotton, Bt rice, potato, soybean and many such vegetables. All these methods lead to reduce post-harvest losses. Also new technologies are trying to be tested crops can be made self resistance to reduce yield loss with minimal or no use of pesticides.

Application in animal husbandry:

The application of biotechnology is rapidly growing in this area to increase production efficiency through manipulation and control of the physiological system and improving the health and well-being of animals. Direct manipulation and alteration of genetic material have the potential to evolve good quality breeds with higher production of products. Animals are cross-breed nowadays to achieve the best yield of products. Also, cloning embryos are done to produce genetic duplicates of an animal. Hormones-based vaccines are being made and injected regularly to keep the breed healthy and help them to mate at a faster rate.

Application in environmental remediation:

Biotechnology plays an important role in working on issues like deforestation and air pollution. Particulate matter are found using devices that help us know the purity of air. Much researches by biotechnologists are made to provide a clean and renewable alternatives to traditional fossil fuels, creates a lot of pollution. Many new technologies are made in laboratories to convert plastic wastes into useful material likes for example, plastic bottles are being recycled to make products like baskets, shoes and even synthetic cloth materials.

Application in food industry:

The most common and broad use of biotechnology is in the food industry, and it’s been evident from history that the use of biotechnology was in role. The production of bread, alcoholic drinks like beer, yogurt are being fermented on large scales. Dairy products like cheese are also developed by using bacteria called lactococcus and lactobacillus to create a low pH and helps to coagulate milk proteins. Wines also rely on bacteria, the bacteria ferment malic acid into lactic acid. Even chocolates are being made through the process of fermentation. All the food products are processed in the industry use. Also biotechnology plays role in the packaging of material to increase its shelf life.

Hence, biotechnology is used every day and everywhere, whether knowingly or unknowingly, in our day to day lives.
