It is a complex phenomenon that can have a significant impact on one’s life. It can pressurise someone to comply to the norms and expectations of their social group, which can have positive or negative effects.
Peer pressure may arise due to expectations from family, friends or in the influence of any group that the person interacts frequently. Negative peer pressure can load someone to engage in drug use, bullying and other forms of misconduct. This form of pressure is particularly experienced by adolescents and young adults who are seeking approval and acceptance from their peers.
While peer pressure is often related with negative effects which can lead to risky situations, conformity to harmful norms.
Examples of negative effects of peer pressure can be:-

• drug abuse : peers generally fall prey to try alcohol, cigarettes and other forms of drugs which lead to addiction and poor health.
• bullying: peers tend to encourage to fight and bully someone who is weaker than them so as to exert power upon them. It leads the person to suffer from depression , anxiety and low self esteem.
It has many positive effects as well . Some examples are like:-
• encourages to pursue goals : peer pressure in positive terms can encourage someone to pursue their goal whole heartedly which can prove beneficial in personality development, academics and athletic development. One can feel motivated and utilize this feeling for studying hard and developing healthy habits.
• development of new skills : peer pressure can also be encouraging when it comes to learn new skills and diversity themselves. One can gain extra knowledge and can have an upper hand. Also in group level peers can learn and motivate each other to gain extra knowledge through a set of new skills.
• social support : peer pressure can foster a sense of support or connection which can have positive effects on someone’s state of mind. For example, if someone in a group of friends is going through hardship , the other friends can provide moral support and can be a source of encouragement.
Steps to curb peer pressure :-
• Learn and practice to say no. The more certain and forceful you are in your refusal , less people will bug you in.
• choose a friend circle that support and encourage to choose good attributes rather than practicing or indulging in bad habits .
• Seek support from parents and elders on how to overcome the negative effects of peer pressure.
• Pay attention to how you feel. If something doesn’t feel right its not right even if you friends are supporting you.
• Talk to the person who is making you feel pressurized, let him or her to know that you are uncomfortable and tell him/her to stop.
Those were the steps through which peer pressures can be reduced . It is always better to raise voice rather than sitting quietly.
