Food Technology
Food Technology
Food technology is a branch of science that deals with the application of science that refers to the technology involved for processing, preservating, packaging and distribution of food. It works to develop new food products, improve the existing and find ways to increase the shelf life. Extensive research goes on to make the product more nutritious before making it available in the market. Food technology is playing a significant role to produce a wide variety and distribute them worldwide.
Engineering in food processing and technology focuses on combining the principles of food science, chemistry and microbiology which imparts knowledge required for a career in food industry.
Basic techniques and technologies used in food industries are thermal processing such as canning and pasteurization, high pressure processing , freezing, pasteurization ,fermentation, addition of preservatives, texture and flavor.
4-year B.Tech programm of Food technology and processing at IILM University, Greater Noida provides students to build their careers in the discipline of food sciences. The curriculum involves subjects in food chemistry, microbiology, food processing, food quality control, food safety and food regulations. Students also learn about national food laws and regulations as well as food processing equipment. It makes the student ready to work on industries.
CAREER OPTIONS IN FOOD TECHNOLOGY :-
•Food scientist: food scientists work and develop food products that are nutritious and can be included in the diet; they work to increase shelf life . knowledge gained in food chemistry, microbiology and processing techniques is applied to create innovative food processing techniques.
•Quality control manager: they are responsible for ensuring the quality and standards. They take responsibility for checking the products from raw materials to final product to ensure that products received by the customers meet their quality needs and are not harmful to customers.
•Food safety auditors: they work to check the food products to meet the safety requirement of the products. Even the quality is checked frequently while processing the food through inspections, records and test products on regularly to meet the regulatory requirements.
•Sensory scientists: they are in charge for evaluating and testing the sensory properties of food products such as taste, texture, smell, color and appearance. They try to improve the sensory products with technologies to make it more user attractive.
•Food packaging engineer: engineers use their knowledge of material science and innovative packaging technologies to develop best packaging solutions that maintain quality and protect from biotic stresses. Also they work on how the packaging can be environmentally friendly and increase the product’s shelf life.
•Food marketing specialist: this team ensures the food product meets all government laws and guidelines before publishing the products in the markets. The labels, manufacturing dates and date of expiry are all ensured by them. Different strategies are made to sell the products to increase the sale. Other advertisements are posted on social media to make the people aware about the products.
These are few career options available to students in food industry. With the increasing population, the demand for safe, nutritious and sustainable food products will be higher. There are many more career options and opportunities for the students pursuing food technology.
